Snowy drifts covered the lawn and the street. Sometime during the night, it had finally fallen, covering all the city’s flaws. Another positive sign for the season, a sort of new beginning for everything.

Especially herself. She’d yet to decide how to go about it, though.

Originally, she’d planned to go home to Chicago and “break up” with Donald. She’d thought she’d inform her mom over the telephone.

Now, that seemed as big a lie as bringing Brice here to be Donald.

She should come clean in time for Christmas. She should talk to her mom about Pete and the rest of the mess she’d created.

Only, her heart was tangled with thoughts and feelings she didn’t know how to combat, and Brice had become way more than an escort she’d hired. He was her friend, the kindest, sweetest person. He’d helped her immeasurably. He’d trusted her with his private thoughts. In the process, he’d stopped being Donald and become just himself.

What did she do about that? Worse, what happened when Christmas ended? Would they walk away from each other and never cross paths again? She didn’t want that. She wanted ... wanted ... to see his face every day.

Carley sucked in a breath. His voice from behind her sent it rushing back out.

“Hey, you ready?”

Carley glanced over her shoulder. “How exactly are we going to get there? Half the city’s snowed in.”

“Well ... your mom has solved that.”

Interested, Carley turned in place. Neither their rental car nor her mom’s compact car was a good choice for snowy weather.

Her mom entered the room, the phone to her ear. “Five minutes? Okay, we’re ready. Bye, Tom.”

“Tom? Is this the Tom?”

Her mom laughed. “The Tom, yes. He has a four-wheel drive. I wanted you to meet him tomorrow, somewhere fancy, but I guess today’s good enough. Everyone likes Christmas trees.”

Minutes later, a throaty rumble in the drive led Carley to the window.

A man climbed out of a large pickup. Tall, standing well over six feet, and lanky, his long legs and wide-brimmed hat, surprised her. “All he lacks is a horse,” she said. From his blue jeans to a sheepskin jacket, he was every inch a cowboy.

Her mom laughed, and Carley retreated from the window. The doorbell rang, and Brice answered it.

He reached up and adjusted his gray knit cap. “You must be the famous Tom.”

Tom cocked one eyebrow. “Well, now, that just depends on what I’m famous for.” He caught sight of her and his smile stretched wide. “You must be Carley. If you aren’t the spitting image of your mom, and just as pretty.”

She accepted his compliment with a nod. “It’s good to meet you, especially since I hadn’t heard of you until three days ago.” She stared, pointed, at her mom, then gestured toward Brice. “He’s with me.”

Tom chuckled. “I guessed as much.”

“Donald Monahan,” Brice said, not missing a beat.

Her stomach clenched. Donald, not Brice.

Tom shook his hand. “Thomas Claeson, but call me ‘Tom’. I don’t stand on ceremony.”

They parted, and he tipped his head toward her mom.
